As much as I hate to say this, the time has come for me to stop blogging on olive & a so that I can focus on my family and school. It has been a decision I knew I had to make but have been putting it off for a while. I've finally come to terms with it but it still makes me sad. I love blogging as it has allowed me to learn more about myself, feel inspired, and "meet" new people. I hope to be able to blog again (outside of our family blog) in the future.

I really just want to thank you sweet readers for reading. It's been two and a half years since I started olive & a and I've loved getting to know my readers over that time. I truly appreciate the comments you leave and your nice emails, they all make my day.

If you still want to keep in contact you can always email me, find me pinning away over on pinterest, instagram @oliveanda, and on facebook as I may post links to things I am loving, sort of like the mashups I do.

Ah sorry to just disappear last week. I had a school final that I had to study and stress over but it's over with so now I can breath again. How was your weekend? We finally had rain here and that in itself made my weekend. I don't think we've had a good solid rain storm since May.

A while back I shared a little teaser of a wood stained painting that I did using Nicole's tutorial. We finally hung it up yesterday on a tiny blank wall and I thought I'd share the result. I'll be honest, my writing is not straight nor perfect and at first I let that bother me but now that I've been staring at it I think I like it that way, gives it a little more character (at least that's what I keep telling myself).

The quote is a spin off of the quote 'What I love most about my home is who I share it with' first seen here in this design*sponge sneak peek. I was going to do the original quote but knew I was going to run out of room so I had to change it up a bit. Now it's a little more me I guess. :)

These two photos featuring pretty nightstands caught my eye recently. I really like seeing how people style these little intimate areas. Often times it seems that these little tables get forgotten when it comes to decor but they have the potential to play a big role in how the room looks and feels if styled.

Right now I'm trying to figure out what I want to do for the bedside tables in my room. I've been thinking of doing something with stacked art like this first photo but haven't found the right thing(s) to frame. Decisions, decisions, right? ;)

THE skirt!

When I confessed my love for a certain striped skirt (in this post), I never thought it would actually end up hanging in my closet. I can't really justify buying a $160 skirt right now so while in Utah this summer, my mother in law Linda and I put our heads together and figured out a way to make one, for about $18. Yes!

Please disregard the disheveled look, I'd had kids crawling all over me for three hours at church.

I purchased two yards (although I probably could've just got away with one) of this Premier Prints vertical stripe in white/navy which for this skirt was turned on the horizontal. The inspiration skirt was studied until we felt that we had a generally good idea of what we needed to do to make the skirt and then played around with the fabric until we got what we wanted.. I am so, so happy with how it turned out and honestly wouldn't have this skirt without Linda's help. I hope that my sewing knowledge can match hers one day.

group discussion : plate walls

In my dining room I have two small walls that meet together (hope that makes sense) and I've been trying to figure out what I want to put on them. Plate walls are so pretty me thinks and has been something I've wanted to try in my home. Those two walls might be good contenders for something like the above. I especially love plate walls when they are more of an eclectic nature, with a good mix of prints, patterns and colors.

Are you a fan of plate walls? Have any of you ever tried this and what would be the best (and cheapest) way to hang the plates? I know you can get the metal spring type ones that wrap behind the plate but is that my only option? Please help a girl out! :)

pretty hanging things

For a while (and possibly still now) there was much excitment in blogland over hanging tissue pom poms used in party decor. I can certainly see the appeal, they are very pretty and fun. I've used them. :) Anyway...I was trolling through my pinterest boards and noticed a trend of using (other) pretty hanging things to pump up the party decor. I think my favorite is the one using ribbon (or are they crepe paper streamers?) paired with cafe string lights. So simple but very festive.

bruschetta with strawberries and tomatoes

I haven't known the awesomeness that is a grill until recently when my husband received one for Father's Day. We have been putting that thing to good use lately as any excuse to not heat the house is fine by me. I saw this recipe for bruschetta with strawberries and tomatoes and just had to make some the other night to go along with our steaks and corn on the cob. This 'oh so good' little appetizer is definitely going into our grilling repertoire. I really want some now...

Ingredients

1/2 pint strawberries, hulled and quartered
1/2 pint mixed cherry tomatoes (red and yellow), quartered
3 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil
1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing bread
salt
freshly ground pepper
1 large baguette, cut on the diagonal into 1/2 inch thick slices

Make

In a medium bowl, mix first five ingredients with 2 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
Place bread on a baking pan and brush with olive oil; flip and repeat. Heat grill to medium-high. Transfer bread to grill; grill until slightly charred, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
Place grilled bread slices on a platter and top each with a heaping spoonful of the strawberry-tomato mix.

I'm back! We're all moved. It's crazy hot here in TX (hello, 105!?!!). We have internet now. I missed blogging (and you of course)!

Since we've moved into a new space I've had decorating on the brain. I know what I want to do in some rooms and others I'm not so sure...one thing I do know is that I love this little corner of Jordan's San Fran apartment and can't get that grey and yellow combo out of my head. Oh and the horse picture, really liking the horse picture.

Hi and hello! Thanks for all your kind comments about my skirt. It's kinda scary (at least for me) to put yourself out there on the www so thanks for being nice. :) I did finish the other skirt that I've been working on and am super excited to share it with you. It's going to have to wait though because... our summer vacation is over and we are driving back to Texas after being in Utah for two month AND when we get home we have to move, quick! So...I'm going to put olive & a on it's own little vacation and resume blogging when life is a little less hectic (hopefully next week). However, I couldn't just leave you with nothing so here is a mashup to keep your fingers clicking. See you soon!

So I won't pretend to be a fashion blogger but on Monday I posted a small peek at the skirt I made last weekend and had a couple people who wanted to see the finished skirt. I've been in need of a black skirt for a while but haven't been able to find what I really wanted so I decided to make one following this tutorial. Have I mentioned that I love those thoughtful people around the blogosphere who share their skills with the rest of us via tutorials? Love!

romantic summer tablescape

If you've read olive & a for a while it's most likely no secret that I wish I was skilled in the art of floral arranging and party planning. I've probably talked about it enough. ;) But since I'm not, I'll just have to admire those who've got themselves some skills. A good representation of said skills in my book would be this gorgeous tablescape styled by Elizabeth Anne Designs. I just can't get enough of the colorful flowers mixed with the airy table and room. It makes for such a pretty and romantic statement.

p.s. I love the lace table runner that was created using simple strips of 6″ lace stitched together on the straight side. So sweet.

Hello! Happy Monday to you. I thought I'd share a couple snippets of my weekend with you through instagram. Kind of a fun app. Anyone else an instagram-er?

1.On Saturdays all summer my hometown has a gardner's market in a local park where people can sell produce, handmade items and food. It'd been a long time since I've been so we stopped by and picked up some yummy peas and a couple gorgeous flower bouquets. I love farmer's markets!

2. This little paint project has been on my list to do ever since I posted about it. I'm on the fence about whether I like it or not. I think I'll have to hang it up and live with it for a while and then decide if I like it or not.

3. I started a simple black skirt last weekend using this tutorial and finally finished it this weekend. It has been a while since I've sat at a sewing machine so I'm thinking it was a good precursor to my new sewing project.

I mentioned a while back that we'll be moving into a new (to us) house soon. The kids will be sharing a bedroom in our new place and I've been trying to figure out how to make the space come together. My goal is to try and make the room clean and unfussy but still fun. If you're interested, I'll share how it (hopefully) comes together.

One of these days, Landon will have his own dedicated space and I would love to do something similar to this room. It's youthful but not childish. That wood plank wall is pretty much awesome and I'm a big fan of the color scheme. I'll need to remember this for when that day does come.

I've been sifting through some old issues of Martha Stewart Living and came across this sweet idea that I wanted to file away.

The idea is originally for valentines but I think it would be so fun to use as a party favor, say maybe for a baby/wedding shower. It could also be used as a place card for a brunch or dinner. Carnations are relatively inexpensive and you could use any kind of heavyweight paper to go with your theme.

Hello friends! I trust you all had a good weekend. The last couple of weeks have been crazy (but fun!) up to yesterday which was finally a slow, relaxing day. I am grateful that this week is relatively empty in terms of busyness. I have a couple projects that I am wanting to get to though, one of which is making a duvet cover for Olivia's comforter. I have it all planned out in my head, we'll hope it turns out the way I'd like it to.

I thought I'd start the week off with a mashup but instead of an eclectic mix of links I thought I'd be a bit more focused and share a foodie mix. You know how you're not supposed to go grocery shopping when you're hungry, well the same goes for reading food blogs, don't do it when you're hungry like I just did. No bueno!

:: One of my favorite cakes is Angel Food Cake but I've never made it from scratch. This recipe looks easy enough to try.

:: My friend Caitlin is like the Martha Stewart of our friends, she's always whipping up something good. Case in point, this tortellini with tomato cream sauce. (Oh and she just started sharing all her yummy recipes with the rest of us, go check her out and say hi.)

:: Summer time = cold drinks don't you think? Something like this lemon ice.

:: The marriage of pizza and pot pie looks pretty good when they make pizza pot pie.

:: Our fridge has been full of berries lately and this panna cotta and berries would be a perfect use for them.

these new handbags and totes from Jess LC. Such a great small collection of bags with clean lines and good details, things I'm always looking for in a handbag.

I am seriously pining away for the Lake Shore Tote in natural even though it wouldn't be practical for me to have with two kids. Pretty sure it would look great on my shoulder. Ha! I like my current "diaper bag" but I can't wait for the day when I can use cute, impractical purses again that don't have to hold snacks, toys and diapers. :)

I'm a fan of Ina Garten so it's only natural that I love the country kitchen that she designed for House Beautiful's kitchen of the year in 2009. I know I've shared white kitchens before and they aren't for everyone but I am still enamored by them. One of the reasons this kitchen appeals to me is the open ceiling with the exposed rafters and beams. It is so light and airy. Definitely a kitchen that wouldn't be hard to spend time cooking and eating in.

Well hello, olive & a'ers! My name is Jenni and I'm here to talk to you about stuff you must travel with at ALL times. But first, here's a few pictures of me in some far away lands, to prove my advice is legit:

I've visited some other groovy places besides just South America, but the trip pictured above was me and my husband's latest adventure!

So, Heather asked me to list my 3 travel must-haves, and list them I shall.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS, in no particular order:

1) hand sanitizer/sanitizing wipes

I can't stress the importance of this one enough! Airports, airplanes, and foreign contries in general are a petri dish of strange and foul germs we're unaccustomed to, and whenever my husband and I travel, we hand sanitize like it's our job. We even wipe down the arm rests and tray tables at our seats in the airplane.

Yep, there is some intense germophobia going on there, but for good reason. Traveling is an icky, germy thing!

2) Realistic expectations.

Oftentimes, as we anticipate a vacation, we place that trip on a pedastal of high expectations. We expect perfect relaxation, impeccabale service, and an overall breezy, carefree experience. After all, it's VACATION!

Not so, my friends, not so. Vacations are often wrought with stress, angry bickering between spouses ("I thought YOU brought the passports!" "No, you said YOU WOULD!"), and sometimes, unexpected little bumps in the road, like blood on the hotel bed or a massive flood in the bathroom. (That actually happened to us, y'all, and it wasn't at the local Best Western, either. Read about it here.)

All I'm sayin' is, expect the best, but don't be too shocked or disappointed if your vacation isn't always a smooth ride. It's all part of the adventure.

3) Earplugs.

Such lifesavers these little suckers turn out to be. Trust me on this one.

You will want them. You will need them. You will thank me later, when you're sitting just behind the screaming three year old on the airplane, when you want to sleep but the blasted seatbelt sign keeps gonging on and off, or when the 5 star hotel turns out to ALSO have paper thin walls or a front row seat to a busy, noisy street in Manhattan.

In fact, just go ahead and buy those Bose noise cancelling headphones. And then let me borrow them on my next trip, K?

Hello olive & a readers!

My name is Lindsay from Delighted Momma. I am SO excited to be here today while Heather is away on vacation. Lucky ducky!! Today I am going to share with you my top three beauty essentials.

#1. Moisturizer WITH sunscreen

As a licensed esthetician I can not tell you enough how important this is. In fact, if I could only bring one beauty product to a deserted island this would be it. Not only are you protecting your skin but you are warding off future effects of permanent sun damage and aging. My all time favorite product is DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer with SPF 30. It is feather light and never leaves my skin feeling greasy or oily. It also wears great under my makeup. BIG plus.

#2. Lip Balm

I never leave the house without a good lip balm. If you were to take a peak into my purse you would find at least 4 floating around. My FAVORITE is Eco Lips Pure & Simple Coconut. Mmmm! It is all natural and smells like a coconut smoothie! They say lip balm is addicting...not sure if this is true, but I do know that I cant live without it!

# 3. Limiting stress, getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated

Even though I cheated and listed three, I think they are all equally important. Reducing stress as much as you can, getting your beauty rest and drinking plenty of water are imperative not only for personal well being, but also for your skin. Making small positive changes in your lifestyle will make you feel better inside and out!

Hi, olive &a readers! I am happy to be here today to share three essentials
that I think are key when designing a room.

There are many pieces that come together to make a design successful, but the following three are extremely important in my book.

1) Personality, a design should reflect who you are. Sometimes we get wrapped up in the latest trends, but you have to remain true to yourself. Design with elements that will make you happy.

How do you find your style?

Lots of research, thumb through design magazines and blogs. Bookmark ideas.

What do you like or dislike about a space? Soon you will see patterns emerge and you will begin to gain more understanding into your design style.

An inspiration board is a great way to keep track of your of your ideas and help you define your style.

2) Comfort and Function. In my opinion, comfort and function are both equally important and essential to a well-designed space. If you are not comfortable in your space, or it is not functional, what is the point?

I read a cute post on Three Boys,the other day, called Decapitated Duck and a Mother's Dream . I believe Sarah summed up perfectly why a space should be functional and how the definition of functional changes through the years.

Which room do you think would be more functional and comfortable for a young family?

3) Focal Point. A focal point is the main design element in the space. Examples of architectural focal points could be a fireplace, built-in bookshelves, a large picture window.

However, focal points are not always architectural elements. You can create a focal point by using a large patterned rug, or a dramatic piece of art-something that will draw attention into the room and invite you to stay.

Hello olive & a readers! I am thrilled to be guest posting today and Heather has graciously asked me to share my tips on one of my favorite topics: parties! Today I'm going to share with you three tips on creating a lovely party that is mindful of both your guests and your budget.

1. Consider a photo booth.

- It's fun! It's fun for you to have the photos to look at afterwards and fun for guests to view later on Facebook or Flickr to remember both themselves and the party by. It's also a blast to see what creative photos your guests come up with!

- It's affordable! The backdrops and props above are a little more pricey, but you don't need an elaborate set up to make a fun photo booth. When I hosted a party back in September, I opted for a simple streamer background and this DIY chalkboard bubbles tutorial all of which costed me under $20, but if you wanted to spend less than that then all you really need is a camera, picture taker, and a tripod (optional but preferred).

2. Make a plan for the party then ask friends to help!

- A well planned party will always cause less stress for you and more enjoyment for both you as a hostess and the guests you're hosting. I suggest creating a plan for your party with a general theme (fiesta, dessert, vintage) and your top three essentials for the party (food table, decor, invitations, etc.)

- More often than not, friends want to help. I say capitalize on this and help your budget out by delegating responsibilities for people who are willing to contribute towards your partay. For instance, I planned a dear friend's 30th birthday and secretly e-mailed 20 of her friends asking for help with desserts, flowers, photos and set up and had 15 of her friends more than excited to volunteer ( two of whom offered to give money!).

3. Make the party personal.

Your party should be unique and it should reflect the personality of the person or event that you're celebrating. If it's for your birthday, add in touches of your personal style (vintage, eclectic, contemporary) to the decor, serve your favorite food (Breakfast for dinner? Sounds like a ball) and offer entertainment options that you would love to be a part of (photo booth, a dance party, a talented friend drawing caricatures).

Lastly visit sites like Pinterest to collect inspirational images for your party and consider Sweet Lulu's, Olive Manna and shops on Etsy for affordable partyware. In a few weeks we will be moving into a new place and I'm excited to try some new things in terms of decorating. To be honest, our current place isn't really decorated. When we moved in here we were under the impression that we'd only be here for four months. Well...four months has turned into a year an a half. It's sad. We aren't sure how long we'll be in our new place but I'm determined to not live with blank walls.

Gallery walls seem to be ever present in design these day and with good reason. If presented well, they are a great way to show off art and photographs in your home.

We will have a skinny wall between two doors in the living room that I'm thinking something like this chic monochromatic gallery would look good.

I am lucky enough to be part of an amazing organization made up of equally amazing woman who are all supporting their other half in medical school. We get together for different activites/social/service events and the other day we got together for a mini class on floral arranging. I've professed my love of (novice) flower arranging before, I enjoy it a LOT! I thought I'd count this as my monthly creative project.

I was happy to come home with this little arrangement I made using this great tape idea from Martha Stewart {via}. It made it really easy to use the shallower bowl I had on hand as a vase.

I am going to bid you happy weekend a day early! I'll see you back here next week friends!

I thought I would share this find in case anyone else is interested. I've been on the hunt for a drink dispenser for what seems like forever now so I was a happy when I came across this mason jar dispenser at World Market. Perhaps a little bit picky but I wanted a dispenser made of glass, not expensive, and simple in design so this one being glass and $15 bucks made it perfect for me. Can't wait to use it this summer!

Dip-Dyed Stationery

One of my favorite things to do is buy and send pretty note cards. Happy mail makes my day. I'm always up for a diy so I naturally love this dip-dyed stationary from Martha which looks super easy and very customizable. Wouldn't it be pretty to dip some blank note cards in a light peachy-pink hue or maybe a grey like they did in the photo?

The How-To:

1. Fill plastic bin with hot water to a depth of at least 6 inches. Stir in rit dye, starting with a small amount and adding more as desired. Dip a sample strip of paper towel to test the color. If too dark, add water; if too light, add dye. Let solution settle, so there are no bubbles at the surface.

2. Holding your paper as straight as possible, dip into dye solution to desired line. Keep paper in dye until it turns the desired color. Hang to dry.

There are so many amazingly creative people out there (in blog world) and I love that they are generous enough to share their creativity and tutorials with the rest of us. Why thank you! Happy friday! Did you have a good week? Mine was full of studying for school finals and potty training. Super fun right? I'm afraid that is what my weekend will consist of as well.

Congrats to Prince William and Kate, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Can we talk about her dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen? Such a gorgeous and timeless princess dress in my opinion. What did/do you think of it?

In other dress "news", if you are a lover of Shabby Apple but can't bite the full-price bullet you might be pleased to know that they now have a section on their website for practically perfect dresses. These dresses are discounted usually because they have like a missing belt, missing button(s), a small spot, small tear in seam, or a mismarked size tag. I say get out your sewing needle!

How pretty is this branch arrangement?

Anyone else in disbelief that it's already Easter weekend? Where is this year going? I swear it was just Christmas. I'm just glad that there won't be anymore major candy holidays for a while until Halloween. I've eaten more than my fair share!

Last year Olivia was still too little to understand the easter bunny and eggs and treats but this year she's understanding all the fun things that holidays have to offer. I love celebrating holidays with kids, everything is more magical.

Tomorrow we are headed to a friends for brunch and an egg hunt then Sunday we'll have a quiet day as a family. Should be great. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend! See you next week my friends!

easter buckets

So in my quest to make something at least once a month this year, April's project was to make my kids some sort of Easter basket to put all their loot in. Of course I couldn't just buy them normal baskets, I had to find something a bit different. I am hoping that Olivia and Landon won't be self conscience with their buckets in a few years when they realize everyone at the Easter egg hunt has typical easter baskets and they have metal buckets...

When I found these galvanized buckets I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them so I held onto them for a week or two. After thinking of some ideas I finally decided on a simple design of eggs nestled in grass. I'm really love how they turned out and I'm happy to report they worked beautifully at an egg hunt last weekend. I forgot to share last months project with you last month so I'll have to get around to taking a picture of it sometime this weekend.

So I need some help and I'd love to hear your ideas, opinions and feedback. Here's the question...

What type(s) of exercise do you do and what keeps you motivated?

So I hate to admit this but I've still got a bit of post-pregnancy blah left from when I had baby Landon. Try as I might I just can't seem to find a good fit when it comes to exercising. I am not really a runner, when i went running last week I was chased by a possum!!! That kinda put a kabosh on my running high.

I want to look and feel better and I'm anxious because summer is coming and you know what that means...the dreaded swimsuit comes out. So is there a good dvd you recommend? Certain type of workout that's easy on an out of shape person like me? Please help a girl out and lets discuss!

Never in a million years would I have thought to put wood up on my walls. If you'd asked me a while ago what I thought of wood on walls I would've cringed and thought of 1970s wood paneling. These examples, however, are not even remotely close to 70s paneling but are much more visually interesting and shall we say green.

Erin of A Breath of Fresh Erin used salvaged wood in her study with great results.

I swear, only Kevin and Layla would think of using old gymnasium flooring in their reading/guest room.

The Bowers used shipping pallets in baby Bower's nursery. Shipping pallets!

Thanks for letting me take a bit of a break last week. I was able to focus on my family and took some time to think about my priorities and this blog. As much as I love blogging, it isn't on the tip top of my priority list with right now. While I would like to blog five days a week, I have to be honest and admit that I most likely won't be able to do that for the next little while. I want to give you guys good content and not post just for the sake of posting so some weeks might have two posts and others five. I hope you can understand. My mother in law, Linda, is an excellent cake decorator (she even made our wedding cake). A couple summers ago she held a cake decorating class for her nieces and daughters in law where she shared some of her wisdom and experience. I had a lot of fun learning how to use all the frosting tips but haven't practiced much since then I'm afraid. I'm thinking a refresher course is in order when we head home to visit this summer (how about it Linda?).

These gorgeous cakes below serve as great inspiration for when I finally bust out those tips and decorate a cake. I LOVe that ombre cake and how awesome is the cake with rock candy? I'm thinking it would be so fun for Olivia's next birthday.

We're on the verge of moving out of our house and I'm feeling a little guilt about leaving my first house behind. I'm anxious to move on, but we've learned so much from our little home. I wish we could take it with us...and tear down some walls and add on ;)

Last weekend while I was cleaning house and doing yard work I was thinking of a few things I've learned as a first time home owner. I had never decorated a whole house before, unless you count Sky Vodka posters in our college apartment. Then we skipped growing pots (not pot) on our balcony and jumped right into a yard. A bit overwhelming for someone like me.

I imagine you're pretty stylish folks and probably not as much of a mess as me, but I thought I would put together a few mistakes I made so you wouldn't have to...

1. Pick your furniture and fabric before you pick out paint. It's so much harder to find fabric you love than to pick paint to coordinate.

I learned this one the hard way. Everything in our house was brown, brown, brown when we moved in. So we picked paint colors and went at it. Then I had the hardest time falling in love with throw pillow patterns and chair covers. 5 years later, I want to paint everything white.

Which brings me to...

2. Just go for it. It seems the longer you hum and ho about a project the faster you'll want something else when it's finally through. Trends change so don't sit there and think about it too long. Go for it, if you hate it you can change it, but you won't know unless you actually do it.

My backyard has been through so many changes in the years we've lived there. We tore out beds the old owners had, planted grass where we wanted it. Tried to make it the backyard we'd always thought we wanted. Planted veggies in one corner, moved them to another, put them in pots.

Which brings me to...

3. Don't fight nature. Sure you want that exact backyard in Sunset magazine, I do too. But the sun doesn't shine in that corner that is perfect for raised beds. And that area where lush grass would be perfect for your bare foot babes to play gets swampy in the winter. Then the dogs do their Nascar routine through it and you no longer have grass at all.

Work with it, not against it. Sit with your yard one year before making any major changes. You'll find it's secret spots which will keep you from building raised beds over here, and putting grass over there, when you really should have put the gravel and a sitting area in that corner for privacy. Phew! Do you see all the mistakes I've made?

Which brings me to..

4. By the time you think you've finished every project in your house, you'll start redoing them.

Whether it's repainting, replanting or redoing your floors for the 3rd time because your hot water heater exploded in the kitchen (what the heck is the hot water heater doing in the kitchen anyway?). Just when you think you have it all under control, you want to change something, add something or just plain maintenance work.

Which brings me to...

5. Love your house. No matter the shape or size or color.

It might not be your forever home or perfect but this is where today's memories are made. So instead of dreaming of the next one (like I do) with more space, relish in the fact that it only takes 1 hour to clean the entire thing. Or that you have no garage for your Husband to hide in.

Think of it like your first baby. You're going to make some mistakes and possibly mess them up a bit, but on the next round you'll be that much more prepared.

If you've been reading for a while you might remember that one of my goals for the new year is to make/craft/create something at least once a month (you can see last months projects here and here). For February's project, my cute 20 year old niece Ashley commissioned me to make her some headbands. Ashley didn't give me any direction on what she wanted so I had to create something that I thought she'd like. I made a couple headbands but the one that I wanted to share today was this ruffled ribbon headband.

And! since I had extra materials, I thought I would make one to give away!

1. I am doing stripes like this to my downstairs over Spring Break. I have always been a striped kind of gal.

2. Those are children whom we are working with in Guatemala. They just received the school supplies we sent. LOVE THEM!

3. I am a collector of SHOES. I want these and these. I think everyone needs a good red casual shoe plus it goes to a good cause. I love me a good cause. ;)

Today Miss Leslie of fresh out of lemons is sharing her list of things she is currently loving...

1. The Colbert Report. I know this isn't a new show, and my husband and I have DVR'ed the nightly episodes for years, but I've really gotten into watching lately. I enjoy Colbert's way of attacking political (and other) absurdity. He's funny and smart, and I'm a fan.

2. Sarah Addison Allen. My book club chose Garden Spells last year, and I've loved every work by this "magical realism" writer since then. I've just finished The Girl Who Chased the Moon, which was beautifully written. As a Southerner, I also appreciate that her stories are always set in North Carolina because I think that we do have a bit of magic and myth in our small towns and people.

3. Spring Look Books. Everything that I've seen looks classic and fun, with beautiful prints, colors, and accessories. I'm loving all the ideas that Talbots, J. Crew, and Loft have shared with those of us who are sick of winter layers and are dreaming of warm weather.

4. Nude shoes. I never-ever-ever thought that nude shoes would catch my eye. I always thought of them as "Aunt Bee-ish." And then the above mentioned Talbot's Spring Look Book came out. Suddenly I'm obsessed and on the market for a pair.

5. Blogs. I love the idea of having a "space" for creative people to share our lives, projects, tips, and adventures. I'm fascinated by the idea that my stories can be captured in this unique way for whoever comes across my little url. Some of my favorite fellow bloggers (besides olive & a) are Cardigan Junkie, Mackin Ink, Shutterly Lovely, and You Stir Me. All ladies with whom I'd want to be friends in "real life."

It seems we've got some new readers around here lately thanks to a couple sweet girls who've mentioned olive & a, so a big welcome to you if you've found us recently!

The lovely Barb over at The Mom Blog kindly awarded me the versatile blogger award. One of the responsibilities of accepting the award is to share 7 things about myself….so here goes!

7 things that you might not know about me:

1. I played the violin from 4th to 7th grade. I didn't enjoy it and never practiced. When I told my parents I wanted to quit they said I'd regret it. I haven't. Is that sad?

2. I am left handed.

3. I am currently working on getting my bachelors in family life studies and am tttttttttttttthhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiissssssssss close to graduating. When I finish, I'd like to study interior design.

4. I LOVE to read but haven't picked up a "fun" book for about 2 1/2 years. The last book(s) I read was the Twilight series. Not a good note to end on. I'll soon be done with my textbooks and back to the fun books.

5. When I was little I won a Crayola Crayon color naming contest. The winning crayon name? Bedazzled Blue.

6. I am the wife of a medical student.

7. If I could eat one thing, and only one thing it would be potatoes (hashbrowns, french fries, mashed potatoes...you get the idea).

I suppose my attention was supposed to be focused on the blue accessories in this Target ad but what really caught my eye was the bookcase (and that ladder). While I am sure it was professionally styled, what I really like about it is how effortless it appears. Like accessories and books collected over time that have been read and then shelved wherever there was room for them.

I have a couple bookcases that are in dire need of some styling and I could use some lessons on how to do it effortlessly. Jamie's bookcase of the day could be my 'textbook' in which to study from. I'll have to get on that...maybe when my real school work is over with.

I am in the midst of a post-pregnancy wardrobe overhaul and am trying to pin down a few things. 1. Just what my style is and 2. What really works for me and my body type. My clothes from high school just aren't cutting it after having two babies. I may have developed some hips. Just sayin'.

To help with my closet overhaul, it has been really useful to read Kendi's posts on creating a working closet. I have purged my closet and written a shopping list, now I just need to do the actual shopping (and try remixing). My goal is to create a solid wardrobe with basic but classic pieces that I can build upon.

For me, the price tag has always carried more weight rather than the article of clothing so I usually end up buying clothes because they were cheap/on sale. There is nothing wrong with getting a good deal, I'm all for it but there is getting a good deal and then there is getting a good deal on a not so good product. This brings me to goal #2: buy more quality items that will last me through more than three to five washes. I have a feeling it is going to take some patience on my part to not do any impulse buying but if I persist, I know I will be a happy girl with a closet full of clothes I'm in love with.

I am sure I'm not alone in this but I tend to be fickle with the styles of interiors I am attracted to. They tend to change more than I would like. That being said, I've never been big on the more traditional, dare I say stuffy, interiors. Every once in a while I will see something that might convince me I could like a little more formality. This Alabama home designed by Tracery Interiors certainly did. A space I definetely could not describe as stuffy but glamourous.

Is it okay to drool over a kitchen because I think I just did? Those tile walls are gorgeous!
